I met an aeronautical engineer once. His job was to design the front wing on formula one cars...
But thats beside the point. All I have is a question:
"Is theology to religion, as aeronautics is to flying?"
Just wondering.

This is a good analogy, in my opinion.
Of course it takes account of the fact that at certain times theology conducts research, presses the boundaries and enters into unchartered territory in order take the active living of the faith (it's functional application) forward.
At other times, of course, theology is simply intended to explain and clarify 'what is'. To make plain and clear that which may not be quite so plain and clear.
Of course these two things are related to one another.
Someone once said "A preacher takes complex things and makes them simple; whereas a theologian takes simple things and makes them complex"....

it is a great analogy...
except it falls down in this one thing: aeronautical engineers actually do often get things into the air.
theologians, on the other hand, seldom seem to give people the freedom to fly. theology has got so bogged down and full of shit that it's often the "new age" whackheads that give people permission to be free, and to live without fear, and to just be.
but when (and if) theology gives you wings... well, then, it's a good analogy.
